Hello, delegates my name is Henock Louis I am entering my senior year at Penn State majoring in accounting. I only started participating in Model UN two years ago, but I have quickly learned to love it. I have attended numerous conferences and have helped staff the past two PUNC conferences. I am currently the treasurer of the club, the USG of finance, and the USG of technology but what I am most excited about is being your chair for this committee.
Round 2 Sino Indian conflict is set during the early 1960’s and is based around a border conflict between China and India. This committee is particularly interesting because it is a conflict between two of the world’s fastest growing world powers, during the early stages of their new governments. Hopefully, the interplay of our modern day world powers will become clear throughout this conflict. On the surface, this may seem like a simple border conflict but if you look closer, you will see many external and internal factors that have made this conflict incredibly interesting. Delegates in this committee will have to weigh their options: take further military action or defusing the situation with diplomacy. Roadblocks will be thrown up, however, delegates will also have to make decisions regarding issues such as the influence of foreign powers during the height of the Cold War, and keep in mind the strong position of the Indian people and their feelings towards the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people.
This committee is set in 1962 after the election of President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. During this time, conflict over the Indian and Chinese border has seen a rapid increase in violence. The two countries have been engaged in a border dispute since the 1959 Tibetan up-rising, when India granted asylum to the Dalai Lama. The dispute accelerated in the early 1960’s when both China and India engaged in an offensive border policy- putting tensions at an all time high. President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan has turned to you- high level cabinet members in conjunction with several influential military leaders to aid him.
Although, this is my first time chairing a committee, I promise that it will be engaging and stimulate the mind of any debater. My crisis staff and I will provide fast-paced, in-depth crises that will force you to think quickly on your feet.
