Philosophical Dichotomy: Vietnam Conflict Take II

Hello delegates!

My name is Ann Semel and I am currently a sophomore here at the beautiful Pennsylvania State University majoring in Secondary Social Studies Education with the hopes of one day becoming a high school history teacher.  I have participated in MUN since my junior year of high school, and look forward to chairing a committee for PUNC 2012. I had an absolute blast at PUNC 2011, and my hope is to provide an equally exciting experience for all those attending this upcoming PUNC!

“Vietnam Conflict: Take II” is based upon the Vietnam War that took place during the during the 1960s and 70s.  Our committee will pick up on January 20, 1965 following President Lyndon B. Johnson’s re-election to office.  By assuming the presidential title, Johnson not only inherited a country at odds with itself (Civil Rights), but also one entrenched in a civil war half way across the globe. Your goal in this committee will be to decide the American role in the conflict. Through communication, debate, and cooperation, you may choose to sign an armistice agreement, continue to fight for democracy, or let the “domino effect” of communism consume yet another nation.  You will also strive to address the growing anti-war sentiments sweeping the nation.

The committee will be a “who’s who” of prominent Americans from the political, militaristic and social spheres, including Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, U.S. Army General William Westmoreland, and Vietnam veteran Jan “Barry” Crumb. By sitting at this round table of leaders, you are in control.  But beware; this crisis-style committee may throw you some curve balls.  Bring your A-game, because the year is 1965, and the future is up to you.

Once again, I am ecstatic to get this committee underway.  Here’s to another amazing year of PUNC!
